Match Report - 10 Jul 2024, Tiverton Canal Bowling Club Over 60's navy beat Sidmouth Sunrise

This was going to be one of those key encounters, not only had Borough ‘Gold’ come unstuck at Sidmouth earlier in the season but Sidmouth were now in second place and only 10 points behind Borough ‘Gold’
Borough were without Peter Chidgey this week so Lloyd Daniels came in at two with Kevin Finan moving to skip and Phil Brooker at lead. Kevin's side began very well indeed, dropping just a single whilst accumulating '9' for themselves, what could go wrong? Well a ‘3’ on the seventh for Sidmouth, was a possible warning that they were starting to find the green and sure enough they subsequently took control of the mat for a spell of ends which saw them take the lead, 11 – 12 after twelve. Borough managed to regain the mat, adding ‘3’ shots for a two-shot lead only for Sidmouth to draw level and then pick up a single for 14 – 15 with one end to play! With all on the last, it was anyone’s game but Sidmouth must have been feeling the more confident but if so, they’d be underestimating Kevin Finan’s unflappability because, in the end his triple managed to secure the win with a ‘3’, 17 – 15. Phew!
John Gutteridge kept an unchanged side from the previous week with Chris Hutter at lead, and Kevin Parkin at two. They too, got off to a decent start 4 – 0 up after the first three ends but the Sidmouth triple soon started to make things very difficult. Borough kept the lead up until the tenth when they found themselves at ‘7’ shots a piece. It was now very nip and tuck at a time when both rinks were looking very much under threat from the opposition. Sidmouth took a ‘1’ shot lead only for them to drop a somewhat unfortunate ‘3’ on the fourteenth. Then a ‘2’ on the next put a bit more daylight between the sides at 13 – 9 in Borough’s favour yet it remained a very tight battle with the seventeenth end being the pinnacle. Following their long Jack, the close head been moved about and changed, eventually with Sidmouth looking to gain two or three shots thanks to their skip. John had tried in vain with two efforts but with his last and encouragement from Kevin to play onto woods just to the side, he sent with a bit of extra weight coming onto those woods and across it went into the central area to take shot! A touch fortunate perhaps but there’s always hope if you get it in the right area. Anyway, the net result was it gave Sidmouth a tougher task and although they managed a single on the last, it obviously wasn’t enough, Borough ‘Gold’ finishing 14 – 11 to the good.
TBBC ‘Gold’ = 2 Winning Rinks (31 Shots) 8 Points)
Sidmouth Sunrise = 0 Winning Rinks (26 Shots) 0 Points
A tremendous result on the day, could easily have gone pear shaped but both Borough sides kept in the game despite seeing the momentum change quite alarmingly. A really good team effort! 😎
Next up, Axminster away who are very much in the mix for promotion. Hopefully we’ll be better prepared for the change in surface than our lasting outing there a year or so ago.
