Match Report - 24 Jul 2024, Tiverton Canal Bowling Club Over 60's navy beat St Thomas A
This was one of those rollercoaster matches, John's triple, with Kevin Parkin and Phil Brooker, for the first time, really struggled to come to terms with an on form St Thomas, especially their skip, Martin. It was made harder by the sight of clusters of bowls about a yard or so in front of the Jack and seemingly on every end! It was not looking good at 3 - 13 down but we were sticking at it! End nine we were holding 4 or 5 but again, their skip came in but we still managed to come away with one. This proved crucial as this helped us to get back in the match and a '4' on the twelfth by trailing the Jack back was hugely valuable, making it 11 - 13. The momentum was now with Borough and another '4' put John's side 17 - 13 to the good, leaving their Skip to feel somewhat downhearted. He needn't of worried because we proceeded to offer them a way back, on a long Jack we were no where near, so 5 or 6 down John with his last bowl, sent it up with more hope than expectation, managed to come in for second! A huge relief and though they picked up a '2' on the next to come within a single shot, We then managed to pick up a '7' to help complete a 24 - 17 win.
Pete Chidgey's triple were also in a tight battle from the off but they kept things neck and neck until a run of three ends saw them go 8 - 3 up. Their opponents then responded even more emphatically, picking up eight shots from three ends to go 8 - 11 ahead. Chidgey's side battled hard and eventually got themselves back in front, 15 - 14 but St Thomas, were not done and they secured a single on the last end to tie, 15 - 15.
