Match Report - 25 Apr 2024, Tiverton Canal Bowling Club Friendly Triples beat Wellington 5x 3 Whites

Friendly Match Report – 25th April 2024
TBBC (Home) v Wellington (5 Mixed Triples)
A much chillier, cloudier day than the day before so conditions less favourable.
Rink 2 – Pete T, Chris H, Phil Saunders (Skip) saw a very close match played out, Borough starting the brightest but still only 1 shot ahead after nine ends, 7 – 6. Borough looked to be keeping ahead for a few ends after but Wellington put a mini run together that saw then go ahead for the first time, 10 – 11 with three ends to play. Borough took the next two ends to go 13 – 11 up and managed to cling on, dropping a single on the last for a 13 – 12 win.
Rink 3 – Ray, Lesley F and Kevin Finan (Skip) were surely delighted to be given another chance to prove themselves? and early signs were more than promising going 5 – 1 up after five ends. Unfortunately, Wellington chose not to follow the script and stormed back to take a ‘3’ shot lead by half time. Borough picked up a ‘3’ straight after tea but then dropped two ‘4’s appearing to scupper their chances now at 8 – 16 down. It looked a tall order at this point and so it proved but another one of their late rallies saw Kevin and his team secure the last two ends to add ‘6’ shots to their score which proved crucial in the overall scheme of things. Their final score, 16 – 20.
Rink 4 – Kevin L, Kevin P and Brenda Tucker (Skip) played a tight cagey looking first five ends but picked up ‘3’ on the sixth for a 6 – 2 lead. The match remained close but Wellington were slowly edging closer and levelled up at 8 – 8 after twelve. Another ‘3’ put Borough back in front but again Wellington responded and a ‘4’ helped see them go 11 – 15 to the good. Brenda’s side tried their best over the last two ends picking up a ‘3’ in total, just falling short, 14 – 15 at the finish.
Rink 5 - Phil B, Tony B and Pete Chidgey (Skip) looked a strong triple with Phil having come I as a late replacement, and they soon got the wind beneath their sails to leave Wellington in their wake, 11 – 3 at the break. Wellington gained a few shots shortly after but that was all as Borough then continued on winning the last six ends for a comprehensive win, 22 – 6.
Rink 6 – Evie Cox (Lead) playing her very first match, Tony C and John Gutteridge (Skip), came rather unstuck against their Wellington opponents, especially their skip, Alan May who proceeded to deny Borough numerous winning positions with annoying regularity, so much so that John found his side 1 – 11 down after eight ends! A ‘3’ on the ninth was hugely welcomed and gave a semblance of hope but that was all and despite a much improved second half, it was never going to be enough to spare Borough’s blushes on this occasion, finishing up a very disappointing second, 10 - 17.
Result:
TBBC = 2 Winning Rinks (75 Shots)
Wellington = 3 Winning Rinks (70 Shots)
Another enjoyable friendly with honours, shall we say? even, although we’ll take the overall shot count as the main marker – just for the record you understand.
