Match Report - 29 Jul 2025, Tiverton Canal Bowling Club Friendly Triples beat Byeways 5 x 3
This afternoon, we welcomed Byeways for our home 'Friendly'. Originally set for five triples, Byeways could only make four, but thanks to Chris Hutter, David 'Jacko' Broomfield and Evie, they helped us keep to five but playing on behalf of Byeways and they got drawn against Kevin Lower's side, with Sara and Duncan. It turned out to be a cracking contest, a roller coaster, ups and downs and nip and tuck finishing with a strong finish from Lower & Co only to fall short by 1 shot, 17 - 18. Then, once again, Mr (mostly 😜) reliable Garfield with Margaret and Colin took the early wind from their opponents sails to secure a 23 - 11 win. Lesley's side were also sailing ⛵ along nicely, 16 - 6 up after eleven but seemingly the 'After Tea' phenomenon suddenly kicked in and the wind of change resulted in a dramatic 16 - 19 turnaround 😱 But a '3' brought Lesley back to parity with one end to go, and it was close but Byeways secured the winning shot, 19 - 20. I believe that's often referred to as "Snatching defeat from the jaws of Victory" Meanwhile, Kevin Parkin's triple enjoyed a happier outcome, helped greatly by a '6' on the eleventh which went towards a 16 - 12 win despite their opponents winning ten of the eighteen ends. My rink fell behind early on, 1 - 6, then got back to 8 - 9, only to then go 8 - 17 after thirteen ends 😥 But, with the Jack, just behind their shot bowl, it was inadvertently knocked back where we had a number of back woods, this resulted in a Brucy Bonus '5' 😃 for us. Which got us on our way to levelling two ends later, 17 - 17. Byeways, Captain Chris, continued to bowl well and he gained '2' shots before a long Jack on the last made things interesting. Hugh, in his first ever 'Friendly', was very unlucky, getting to the Jack which chose to go one way whilst his bowl went the other, albeit into the ditch and as a 'Toucher'. Alan H then drew the shot, but again, Colin Paddon came in to draw shot that remained in place to earn Byeways another win, 17 - 20.
In the end it was 3 rinks to Byeways 2 to Tiverton Canal but 92 Shots to 81 in Canal's favour. We'll definitely take that as good a win 😃 Thanks to everyone who played their part 👍
