FRIENDLY MATCH REPORT – 9th NOVEMBER 2024
TCBC v WELLINGTON (Indoors) 4 Mixed Rinks
Tiverton Canal Bowling Club played their inaugural bowling match on Saturday, a friendly against our friends from Wellington which took place at Mid Devon Indoor Bowling Club.
Tiverton Canal’s Side was selected from players from both previous Club sides, Park and Borough, with a mix of regular indoor bowlers and a number of players with significantly less experience on the indoor carpet.
Rink 1 – Skipped by Maggie Burnell with, Alan Horwood, Kevin Parkin and Rod Snell (Lead) found themselves falling 2 – 7 behind early on but they managed to turn their fortunes around come the eighth end, putting together a run of five winning ends that saw them take a 10 – 7 lead. Wellington, skipped by Clive Manning retook the lead after the next two, 10 -12, but were unable to hold on as Maggie’s side secured the last three ends for an excellent 15 – 12 win.
Rink 2 – Skipped by Stewart Maddocks with Garfield Barnett, Chris Hutter and Tony Burgess (Lead), this side were not in a charitable mood it seemed as, apart from a single for Wellington on the third, they plundered shots irrepressibly going 22 – 1 up at the halfway stage only let slip a ‘2’ just before tea on the tenth. After Tea it was usual service resumed and by the fourteenth Stewart was 33 – 3 to the good. There was little doubt at this stage who was going to highest rink of the day and after just dropping one more single, Stewarts side came off the rink with a rather formidable score of 36 – 4 score line.
Rink 3 – Ian Turner Skip, with Phil Saunders, Di Parkin and Pete Thornton (Lead) had a much closer encounter, certainly over the first six ends with scores at 3-3 but Ian’s side then showed signs of taking more control and got themselves into a 9 – 4 lead come the Tea break. For a while after the break, there was little change although a ‘2’ on the fifteenth put Tiverton Canal in what looked a comfortable position at 13 – 6. But then, their Wellington opponents pushed hard over the last three ends first with a ‘3’ and then a ‘2’ which made the last end a very tight affair. In the end, Ian was somewhat relieved to restrict his opponents to a single to see his side get squeak over the line, 13 – 12.
Rink 4 – John Gutteridge skip, with Mike Turner, Kay Leach and Charlie Duke (Lead). John feared initially that they might be up against it with early Wellington pressure but a ‘2’ on the fourth end set his side on to a rather dominant sequence of ends putting themselves 17 – 2 at Tea before adding further misery to their opponents soon after, taking a 26 – 2 lead three ends later. Wellington, skipped by Captain Lynda Manning, kept plugging away and got some reward picking up a single and then a ‘2’ but it proved small consolation as John’s side finished with a resounding score, 30 -5.
. . . . . . . .
From Tiverton Canal’s point of view, it was the perfect beginning, to start off with a strong win, albeit a friendly, augurs well. Yes, it’s fair to say we did have relatively strong side out but that suggests good things for the future – that we as a new Club, have such promising potential.
Despite the result, Wellington contributed greatly to make it a good friendly afternoon so we very much appreciate their part, including their sportsmanship, on the day and we look forward a rematch in early February next year.
