Match Report
Match Report - 09 Feb 2025, Tiverton Canal Bowling Club Friendly Rink beat Wellington
This was our second meeting with Wellington on the carpet of MDIBC with both teams including some noticeable changes.
During the first half, after an even start, scores began to fluctuate but it was TCBC who were holding their own for the most part. However, there was only 6 shots in it overall after ten ends, 35 – 29.
Unfortunately, Mike Turner, who kindly came in to the team, along with Alan Horwood, at short notice, fell ill and this meant that Mike didn’t feel well enough to continue. So, Mike, along with Alan understandably had to leave the match.
Fortunately for TCBC Paul Reap was on hand to cover for Mike whilst, former World Short Mat Champion, Phil Atkins stepped in for Alan which made it very interesting for Wellington’s Lynda Manning Captain 😬 and skip, opposite Stewart Maddocks, on that particular rink.
Once things had settled down after the Tea Break, TCBC began to get in to a rhythm across most of the rinks;
Rod Snell (Lead), Pete Thornton, Phil Saunders and Garfield Barnett (Skip) had been neck and neck, 7-7 after eleven ends but suddenly broke away to secure six of the last seven ends to finish, 21 – 10.
Alan Horwood/Phil Atkins (Lead), Kevin Lower, Maggie Burnell, Stewart Maddocks (Skip) were 9 – 4 up after ten ends but romped away, winning six of the last eight for a 24 – 7 finish.
Tony Burgess (Lead, Bev Burgess, Charlie Duke and Andy Hingston (Skip) were finding the going much tougher, 10 shots adrift after ten ends, they rallied hard in the second half only to stopped in their tracks when conceding a second ‘5’ of the match, leaving them trailing in second place, 10 -24 at the end.
Finally, Tony Crawford (Lead), Chris Hutter, Mike Turner/Paul Reap and John Gutteridge (Skip) enjoyed an excellent start, going 7 -0 up after four ends, with Tony Crawford, especially, soon finding his groove to regularly provide a solid foundation for John’s side. However, a dropped ‘4’ on the fifth was a reminder that things could easily change and not to take anything for granted. But, as it turned out, things reverted back in John’s favour and by the tenth end, his side were 15 – 5 up. After the break and the unfortunate departure of Mike, things became somewhat tighter but with Tony once again drawing nicely with his metal arm accessory, the Wellington Skip found himself resorting to bowling heavy woods to change the situation. Unfortunately for him and his team, it didn’t have the desired effect which meant John’s side came away with a somewhat resounding 31 – 7 winning score.
So, another excellent afternoon, played in a good spirit as always, with Wellington playing their part by being both patient and very sporting throughout.
Obviously a very good result for Tiverton Canal which augurs well for the future.
