Indoor Friendly Match Report – 5th April 2025
4 x Mixed Rinks v Tiverton West End
This was TCBC’s last indoor friendly of 2024/25 before the start of the big outdoors adventure under the all-new name and colours.
Tiverton Canal put out another side that contained a good amount of indoor experience which, on balance, looked likely to be the stronger of the two on the day and this did prove to be the case from quite early on.
Rink 1 with Ian Turner, Maggie Burnell, Kevin Parkin and Kevin Lower (L) were quite relentless, securing thirteen of the eighteen ends and finishing off with a ‘Hotshot’ for good measure! Finishing 28 -13.
Rink 2 saw Stewart Maddocks, Phil Saunders (who was called upon at the very last minute), Margaret Roberts and Tony Crawford (L)picked up a ‘5’ early on and again, gave little away apart from a brief blip halfway through, before a run six strong ends piled on the shots for a 33 – 11 win.
Rink 3 with John Gutteridge, Brenda Tucker, Chris Hutter and Rod Snell (L) had to battle hard against a very resilient West End side skipped by Mike Turner, with the first seven ends shared, all with just singles. However, John’s side started to pick up some momentum and managed to pull away, occasionally with a bit of luck to be truthful. Certainly, Mike’s side will have felt frustrated at times as they could not get a proper foot hold in the latter stages which resulted in another win for Tiverton Canal, 24 – 8.
Finally, Rink 4, with Andy Hingston, Garfield Barnett, Di Parkin and Pete Thornton (L) had the toughest of the four rinks, up against the wily Angie Hill, it was nip and tuck for much of the way. Andy’s side had appeared to be breaking away by the break, at 9 – 4 up but Angie side, fuelled with Tea and Cake, secured four ends in a row to take the lead, 11 – 12. But Andy was not going to lie down and he did well to help his side secure the last two ends for a 15 – 12 finish.
So a clean sweep with a strong overall performance so very pleasing but whilst it is always nice to take the honours, I can honestly say it was a very fun enjoyable afternoon played in a good spirit across the rinks and that is what pleases me most.
