Match Report - 27 Apr 2024, Tiverton Canal Bowling Club Friendly Rink beat Ottery St Mary 4 x 4 Whites
Friendly Match Report – 27th April 2024
TBBC (Away) v Ottery St Mary (4 Rinks)
Weather much better than was anticipated, drier, brighter and even a bit of sun although the clouds did eventually build towards the latter stages to bring some spits and spots of rain.
Green was very damp and soft underneath the well mown grass which held up sufficiently well to provide a decent playing surface albeit a bit on the heavier side.
Rink 1 – The side made up of Pete Thornton/Alice Chapman/Tony Burgess/Chris Hutter (Skip), lagged behind over the first six ends but began to pull things back to keep themselves in the game although remained behind, 6 – 8 after ten ends. At this point the watching ‘Away’ crowd close by, were thrilled to see how Chris and his able side, upped their game to level, 10 – 10, four ends later before taking a slender lead on the penultimate end, the first time in the match, and then, capped their afternoon off with a ‘4’ on the last for an excellent, well timed, 16 – 11, win.
Rink 2 -Oliver Kane/Clare Gutteridge/Lesley Finan/Kevin Finan (Skip), after a promising start found themselves falling behind in somewhat dramatic fashion, dropping five ends to go 2 – 11 behind after eight ends played. But, a ‘2’ on the ninth set them on a decent run themselves to close the deficit to make it 9 – 13 with five ends to go. Unfortunately, Ottery secured a ‘4’ on the fourteenth which rather scuppered any real hope and despite taking the last two ends, Borough had to settle for second place on this occasion, 11 – 19.
Rink 3 – Colin Kane/Ray Cottrell/Kay Leach/John G & Phil S. Borough chose to go for a two-pronged approach on this one with John Gutteridge playing the first half and Phil Saunders to be the ‘Finisher’ for the second. Unfortunately, this didn’t quite go to plan, in truth mainly due to the strength of the opposition who settled the better of the two sides on the heavy ‘Ish green which took a few ends to get the hang of (excuses excuses I know 🙄). Dropping a ‘6’ was John’s undoing, so his side did well in the end, to keep the scores as they were, 5 – 11 at the break. Phil then came in but it took him those few ends to get the green so things did go from bad to worse, 5 – 21 after fourteen ends. Phil managed to rally his side for a decent run in which included a ‘4’ to help gain double figures, with the match finishing 11 – 25 in the end.
Rink 4 – Di Parkin/Kevin Lower/Brenda Tucker/Kevin Parkin provided a very solid display up against what were considered to be a reasonably strong Ottery side but it was Borough who dominated for much of the match. A run of five winning ends first put them 10 – 1 up and by the break were an incredible 16 – 2 up, looking very comfortable. They started the second half with a single to add to their excellent tally but then, suddenly, Ottery got into overdrive and kept Kevin’s side at bay for four continuous ends which included a ‘4’ to give them some unexpected hope, 16 – 10. But thankfully, things turned back in favour of Borough, who cleaned up the remaining four ends, to finish with a comprehensive win, 23 – 10.
Result:
TBBC = 2 Winning Rinks (65 Shots)
Ottery St Mary = 2 Winning Rinks (61 Shots)
To conclude, all in all, an excellent afternoon for everyone, honours shared in terms of winning rinks but pleasingly for Borough, a win overall, not that it’s all about the winning you understand.
