Match Report - 23 Jun 2025, Tiverton Canal Bowling Club East of Exe beat Cullompton
This was a slow burner that saw Cullompton competing well on three of the four Rinks. Stewart's were on a different trajectory, going 14 - 1 up after seven ends! They got pegged back somewhat for a time but regained their impetus to finish well ahead, 23 - 11. New lad, Pete Sheppard and his side, looked in control too, 5 -'0 up after four, then 11 - 5 after ten. But a loose wheel nut or two let their opponents back in, 11 - 13 after fourteen ends 😬 A calming single for Mr Sheppard followed, but it was all that they could muster, with the last three ends going Cullompton's way, 12 - 18 . Phil Atkins & Co were up against the enigmatic Brian Clements, him and the green as it turned out, but it was Brian who seemed to master it the best, seeing his side go into a 7 - 18 lead after fourteen ends. It looked like it was all over, bar the shouting, but no, first a '2' then a '6' followed by another '2' effectively made it a last end play off, with just '1' shot in it! With just the skips to bowl, it was looking very much, advantage Phil & Co, holding 3 or 4 but Brian had other ideas, and he drew shot with his first which proved enough to secure the win, 17 - 19.
Ian Turner's side battled away, never quite firing on all cylinders but enough to go 9 - 2 up after eight ends. Cullompton also battled away and clawed their way back, sufficiently to close the gap to '3' shots, 13 - 10 but then a well worked '5' for Ian's side put a halt to their ambitions, ensuring a second winning rink for TCBC, 19 - 11.
So, a hard earned 8 points to 4, for TCBC in the end, well done all!
