Match Report - 24 Jul 2026, Tiverton Canal Bowling Club Over 60s navy lost to Seaton A
Another warm afternoon, green seemingly getting quicker with variations due to dryer areas vs greener areas. The team in confident mood, especially after the win on Wednesday. Seaton A, a bit of an unknown quantity, not having played them this year, but were languishing in the bottom half of the table. However, nothing can be taken for granted and, as can happen, things don't always go as you might expect, especially on a bowling green.
John's triple, with Ian Turner in for the absent Kevin P, began very brightly although a '4' against on the third was a bit of a set back. Still, they continued on and gained a decent 15 - 8 lead after eleven ends. Unfortunately, when holding 2 or 3, John inadvertently ran through, knocking the Jack away and into the arms of three opposition bowls! Not good!! This triggered a good run of ends for Seaton culminating in a horrendous wick from out wide that saw the skips bowl shoot across for shot when we were holding a number of shots ourselves! This put them in a 15 - 16 lead! It was nip and tuck for the remainder and the last end, we were still a shot down, holding 2 or 3, John, again, made errors of judgement, this time bowling a fraction too tight with his last, when really caution should have been the order of the day, and his bowl hit a short Seaton bowl plumb in the middle, which saw it advance despairingly towards the Jack and sit for shot! What a disaster! No need for the skip to bowl his last! Needless to say they were cocker hoop!
Meanwhile, Stewart's side also had a battle on, going behind over the first few ends, managed to level at 5 - 5 after seven. Seaton, then moved ahead again, 6 - 10 after twelve ends. Stewart & Co had to dig deep and kept their hopes more than alive, securing four of the next five ends which put them in the lead, 12 - 11. The last end, had become critical, needing to pick up a single to at least have a share of the points but, after a tense, close final contest, Seaton managed to gain the single which, although meant it was a 12 - 12 draw, it of course, resulted in a hugely disappointing loss overall with Seaton finishing 2 shots ahead. OK it's not the end of the world, or our chances of promotion by any means but it is a case, from John's anguished perspective, of defeat snatched away from the jaws of victory and feels responsible for losing the team at least 6 points that would have put us in a very good position for the remaining weeks ahead. "That's the way the mop flops" sometimes, apparently?
